English
Seaweeds and their downstream processed products
Application Uses

It has wider applications in food, pharma, textile, dairy, ice cream, beverage industries

Salient Technical Features
  • Solid seaweed residue obtained during liquefying, processed for the preparation of refined κ-carrageenan. Refined kappa-carrageenan is used as an emulsifier, thickener and gelling agent in a wide range of commercial products
  • The process is simple and produce κ-carrageenan in high yield (25- 30% w. r. to dry seaweed granules)
TRL
Scale of Development:

(5 kg Kappaphycus granules/batch)

Business scope & opportunity

India imports large quantity of kappa-carrageenan that involves foreign exchange exchequer. The technology has been transferred to an industry for commercial production in India & revenue opportunity potential of licensee is ~₹50 Lakhs

Environment Considerations

The solvent used in the process can be recovered by distillation and can be reused
