Application/Uses/Problem being addressed

Indian salt production has crossed over to 30 million ton and the country stands 3rd among the salt producing countries of the world. Gujarat with an annual production of 20-22 million ton occupies first position in the country. More than 60% of the total salt produced in the country goes for industrial applications, chlor-alkali and soda ash industries being the major consumers. With the fast expansion of chlor-alkali industries in the country, it is feared that the total salt production in the country may not suffice the entire requirement of the industries. Edible salt is also picking up momentum and looking to this scenario there is every need for increasing good quality salt production in the country. Though India produces such a huge amount of salt annually, we are not able to compete in the global market as far as the quality of salt is concerned. More than 60% of the salt produced in the country does not even meet the industrial specifications prescribed by the Bureau of Indian standards (BIS) and the industries are incurring a huge amount in purification of brine before processing it for chlor-alkali manufacture.

Salient Technical Features including Competing Features/ Impact

The institute has worked in close collaboration with the Salt Department under the Ministry of Commerce & Industry (Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion), Government of India), Industries Departments of various state governments viz. Gujarat, Rajasthan, Odisha & Tamil Nadu, Indian Salt Manufacturers Associations, Tuticorin Salt Manufacturers Association, Bhavnagar Salt Manufacturers Associations and reputed NGOs like SEWA, ANANDI, AHRM in Gujarat, Humma & Binchanpalli Salt Production & Sales Co-operative Society in Odisha and Markanam Salt Factory in Tamil Nadu. The institute has already established two model salt farms, one in the state of Rajasthan and the other in the state of Odisha, in collaboration with the Salt Dept., Govt. of India and demonstrated good quality solar salt production from sea / subsoil brines. The model salt farms established are in continuous operation since its inception.
